Ulster Transport Museum part 2 TITANICa

From the Rail gallery we moved to the next exhibit.  The Ulster Museum has a section dedicated to the Titanic.  They have a beautiful collection of artifacts.

A small, condensed history lesson.  The White Star Line commissioned the Olympic class steamers Olympic, Titanic and Britannic to compete with Cunard Lines ships the Lusitania and Mauretania.  They had earned the nickname "greyhound of the sea" because of their speed. "Mauretania kept the Blue Riband for more than twenty years, from 1909 to 1929"  the Blue Riband was a speed record.  Titanic was trying to break that record on her maiden voyage.  The results were disastrous.

White Star Line had distinguishing features on their ships.  "It has long been customary for many shipping lines to have a common theme for the names of their ships. White Star gave its ships names ending in -ic, such as Titanic. The line also adopted a buff-coloured funnel with a black top as a distinguishing feature for its ships, as well as its distinctive house flag, a red broad pennant with two tails, bearing a white five-pointed star."
